How Much Is Personal Client Contact Worth?

Every year one of my doctors sends me a birthday card. It’s the same card each year. And it arrives on the same day before my birthday each year. But it is always a pleasure to receive it. And it is an indicator to me that I’m important enough for the doctor to make an effort to perform this function each year. It also stands out that this is the only doctor I have who commits to perform this small courtesy each year.

Do you wish you could do something like this without the trouble of calendaring, prodding yourself or a staff member to purchase, address and mail the card? Do you even wish you were clever enough to customize the card? Well, what’s it worth to you?

IambicChick.com, launched by Cleveland-based female entrepreneurs Deb Solyan and June Poole, offers the convenience of sending greeting cards without going to a store. With five simple steps, site visitors can place an online order for a card containing a personalized poem, with original artwork and photography, sent via mail to anyone in the world. Poems are comprised of three stanzas or more. Users can also register for a useful email feature which reminds them of upcoming important dates as well as a monthly e-newsletter featuring seasonal poems.

The cost for the first personalized card is $9.95, including postage. Cards in which the user sends the same poem to multiple recipients, are $5.95 for the first card, with subsequent cards for $3.95 each. There are price breaks for five or more cards and for invitations and other poetry styles.

The price sounds high. But honestly, to send a personalized unique card automatically to your top 20 or even 50 clients and referral sources throughout the year, without need to think about it in advance except for the first time . . . well, you do the math and decide. Only you know how much that personal client contact is worth. That’s not for me to say.
